Sephiria Controls & Combat
Read telegraphs, use RMB defense correctly, and stay alive long enough for your inventory grid to matter.
Combat philosophy in Sephiria
Sephiria is a top-down action roguelite where fights are won by reading telegraphs, not by button mashing. TEAM HORAY’s pixel art is deliberately readable: most dangerous attacks announce themselves with red laser lines showing where damage will land. Your job is to respond with movement, right-click (RMB) dodge, or RMB parry depending on attack type and your weapon branch. Players who ignore telegraphs blame gear; players who master them clear chapters with modest artifact grids.
This guide covers default PC controls, defensive options, stamina expectations, and branch-specific combat habits. Pair it with Getting Started for hub flow and Weapon Types for how each branch wants you to engage distance.
Default PC controls (reference)
Exact rebinding is available in Steam settings, but most players use:
| Action | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Move | WASD | Eight-direction movement; diagonals matter for dodge angles |
| Primary attack | LMB | Branch-specific combos and charge behaviors |
| Dodge / Parry | RMB | Context-sensitive defensive tool |
| Skills / Miracles | Number keys | See Miracles & Potions |
| Grid preview | Q / E | Rotate or preview artifact/tablet placement on the inventory grid |
| Interact | F or E | Town NPCs, doors, pickups |
| Pause | Esc | Run pause and settings |
Controller layouts mirror these roles — face buttons attack, shoulder or right stick click handles defense depending on preset. If you play online co-op, confirm everyone’s control scheme before Hard Mode attempts where split-second parries matter.
Red laser telegraphs explained
When an enemy winds up, a red beam often draws the threatened line or arc. Treat colors and thickness as urgency indicators:
- Thin fast lines — snap dodges perpendicular to the beam.
- Wide cones or circles — create distance or parry if your weapon supports it.
- Multi-hit patterns — dodge the first line, then reposition; do not panic-roll into the second telegraph.
Bosses across six chapters reuse families of patterns with speed tweaks. Learning one chapter boss teaches reflexes for the next. For the ultimate exam, study patterns on the Chapter 6 Final Boss page after you can consistently read normal telegraphs.
RMB dodge versus parry
Dodge grants i-frames and repositioning at a stamina or cooldown cost depending on branch upgrades. Use dodge when:
- Multiple overlapping telegraphs leave no safe standing tile.
- You are grabbed or surrounded and need space to reset.
- Your weapon is mid-swing and cannot parry in time.
Parry negates or reflects damage when timed against parryable attacks — often marked by a distinct flash or shorter wind-up. Use parry when:
- A single heavy hit threatens to delete your health bar.
- Your Sword & Shield or Katana build invests in parry rewards.
- You need to stagger elites to open DPS windows for Greatsword or Staff bursts.
New players should default to dodge until they recognize parry windows. Parry fishing on unknown attacks wastes Potions and ends runs early.
Stamina, i-frames, and greed
Every defensive tool has recovery. Chaining dodges back-to-back without watching your stamina bar leads to standing still during the one attack that matters. Safe habits:
- Dodge through, not into, follow-up swings.
- Stop attacking when a second telegraph appears during your animation lock.
- Use Potions only after failed reads you understand — random chugging hides bad habits.
- Preview your grid with Q/E between waves, not during active telegraphs.
Hard Mode’s elemental modifiers punish greedy dodges by adding lingering floor hazards. Clean defensive discipline matters more than raw DPS there.
Branch-specific combat tips
Sword & Shield
Block and parry windows are the teaching tool for Sephiria defense. Face elites head-on only when your shield upgrade confirms reduced stamina drain.
Greatsword
Commit to fewer, heavier swings. Dodge out during wind-up, not mid-swing unless an upgrade cancels the animation.
Dagger
Stay inside telegraph lines with micro-dodges; your DPS comes from uptime, not trading hits.
Katana / Blade
Parry rewards fuel combos. Learn which enemy attacks are parryable before chasing Tier List rankings.
Crossbow
Kite along beam edges; never backpedal in a straight line when red lines track you.
Staff / Magic
Cast during enemy recovery frames. Your defensive tool is positioning plus Miracles — see Miracles & Potions for cooldown planning.
Inventory grid in combat
Combat and build craft intersect when proc effects trigger from adjacent tablets. A perfect parry means little if your artifacts never activate because tiles were placed without Q/E preview. Mid-fight, pick up drops that fit your planned adjacency instead of highest rarity alone — details in Inventory Grid and Tablet Combinations.
Co-op positioning
With up to four players, telegraphs overlap visually. Assign roles: one player draws aggro, others dodge outward from shared laser intersections. Remember no host migration — if the host lags, everyone suffers. Read Co-op for session etiquette.
Practice checklist
- Identify red laser types in chapter one without taking damage.
- Clear an elite using dodge-only, then parry-only for learning.
- Preview a tablet swap with Q/E between two rooms.
- Beat a boss using zero Potions to prove telegraph mastery.
- Retry with your Destiny Inscription nodes disabled mentally — can you still win on skill?
Controls are Sephiria’s real progression gate. Inscription and artifacts multiply skill; they do not replace it. Master RMB defense, respect red lines, and your builds finally perform the way tooltips promise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What does the red laser mean in Sephiria?
Red laser telegraphs show where an attack will hit. Move out of the line, dodge with RMB, or parry when the attack type allows it.
How do I dodge and parry in Sephiria?
Use RMB (right-click) for defensive actions. Dodge gives i-frames and space; parry requires timing against specific attacks, often with Sword & Shield or Katana.
What do Q and E do in Sephiria?
Q and E preview and adjust artifact and tablet placement on your inventory grid so you can plan adjacency bonuses without misplacing tiles mid-run.
Which weapon branch is easiest for learning combat?
Sword & Shield exposes block and parry windows clearly. Greatsword slows pacing so you can read telegraphs before switching to faster branches.
